ATLANTA, GA — The Southeast’s most accomplished voices in television and media will take center stage as the 52nd Annual Southeast EMMY® Awards returns on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at the prestigious Grand Hyatt Atlanta in Buckhead.

Hosted by the Southeast Chapter of National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the highly anticipated ceremony will convene leading journalists, producers, storytellers, and creatives from across Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Asheville, North Carolina for an evening dedicated to excellence in television and digital media.

Following the official nominee announcement in April, this year’s contenders reflect the depth, innovation, and impact of storytelling across the region. The evening will feature a red carpet reception, formal gala dinner, and the presentation of the coveted EMMY® statuettes, honoring those whose work continues to inform, inspire, and shape cultural conversation.

A Brooklyn native with Trinidadian and Barbadian roots, Riley is a classically trained actor with degrees from Lehigh University and Ohio University. His career spans Broadway, television, and film, with notable appearances in Hit the Floor, Greenleaf, and The Bourne Legacy, establishing him as a dynamic and versatile presence across the entertainment industry.

Atlanta, GA - The Southeast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) proudly hosted its 2026 Student Production Awards on Saturday, honoring outstanding student achievement in television and media production across the region.

Held in Atlanta, the annual event brought together emerging creatives, educators, and industry leaders for an inspiring celebration of storytelling, innovation, and excellence. The evening was masterfully led by Emmy Award winning journalist and CBS Atlanta anchor Sharon Lawson, who served as Mistress of Ceremony.

Under the leadership of veteran journalist Donna Lowry and the Southeast Chapter Board of Governors, the production highlighted the depth of talent rising from high schools and colleges throughout the Southeast region. The awards are part of NATAS’ ongoingmission to cultivate the next generation of media professionals while recognizing excellence in student-produced content.

The 2026 NATAS Southeast Student Production Awards ceremony showcased an impressive range of talent across both college and high school divisions. Out of nearly 270 applicants, the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) led collegiate honorees with 11 awards, followed by the University of South Carolina and Furman University. Among high schools, The Westminster Schools earned the most awards, with 10, followed by Central Educational Center with 8. Winners represented a diverse group of institutions from across the region, highlighting excellence in journalism, storytelling, and production. From in-depth news coverage to creative storytelling and technical achievement, this year’s recipients reflect the strength of the next generation of media professionals. All high school winners are automatically entered in the National Student Production Awards. Last year, a school in the Southeast won at the national level.

Throughout the program, presenters took the stage not only to announce nominees and winners, but to pour into the next generation. Each shared personal reflections from their own journeys in media, offering powerful responses to the question:“What would you tell your 18-year-old self?”

History Made: Army Veteran Raquel Riley Thomas Wins Elite Queen of the World with Self-Defense Mission

Washington, DC — May 12, 2025 — Decorated U.S. Army Captain (Veteran), award-winning media executive, and global self-defense advocate Raquel Riley Thomas has made history as the first U.S. Army Veteran to win the title of Elite Queen of the World 2025, marking her sixth beauty queen title. Her winning platform, DefendRILEY, is a self-defense initiative dedicated to empowering women and young girls with the skills and confidence to protect themselves.

Raquel’s journey is a testament to resilience and reinvention. From serving nine years in the military to walking international runways, she has combined discipline, elegance, and advocacy into a purpose-driven life. She is the Founder and CEO of An Officer and Gentlewoman, LLC, a global media and entertainment company that has produced over 5,000 campaigns, represented Emmy-winning talent, and earned more than 75 industry awards.

Raquel is also an alumna of Hampton University, a graduate of the Harvard Business School’s Mastery of Negotiation program, and a recipient of one of the nation’s highest honors—induction into the Library of Congress for her distinguished service and contributions to media, leadership, and advocacy.

But her mission is deeply personal. In 2013, Raquel lost her mother, M. Riley, to suicide. She later learned her mother was a survivor of sexual assault—an unspoken trauma that had lasting impact. In her honor, Raquel created DefendRILEY, a movement to provide hands-on self-defense training to women and girls across the globe.

“This crown is for my mother,” says Raquel. “I couldn’t change her past, but I can ignite a fire in other women and children to defend their present and their future.”

A red belt in Taekwondo, Raquel trains under 6th-degree black belt Master Tommy Cho, and together they’ve appeared on multiple television morning shows to demonstrate simple, real-life techniques every woman should know. She is also actively advocating to make self-defense a high school elective and has launched a Change.org petition to rally national support.
